What do you think of when you hear the word “magic”? You probably think of witches and wizards…you know, individuals who possess the ability to perform the magical arts on either individuals or objects. I’ve met a witch – she lives next door to me. She’s actually hundreds of years old, but makes herself look younger to fool her husband. If you ask me, she’s only after his wealth and casted a love spell on him. She’s also really evil and mean to all children. I feel sorry for her stepson, who has to live with her every day. I try to stay out of her way and out of her sight.
Maybe you think of fairies…you know, magical beings with wings, who, like witches and wizards, can perform magic on Sims and objects. I’ve met a fairy – she has pointy ears and large, sparkly wings to help her fly all over the world and change it for the better. She’s really pretty and wears a torn green
dress that matches her hair, eyes and wings. She can also become as small as a firefly, so she isn’t as easily noticed. I saw her in the woods one day and she blessed me with her magic. I hope to see her again someday…
Maybe you think of magicians…you know, normal Sims who don’t really possess magical abilities, but perform all sorts of amazing tricks and stunts, ranging from card tricks to sawing someone in half! They may not really be magical, but they are incredibly talented and it takes a lot of skill, discipline and perseverance to do the things they do. We can all learn something from them.
Maybe you think of vampires…you know, undead creatures of the night who crave human plasma. I’ve seen a vampire – he was really pale and scary looking, with teeth as sharp as knives and fiery eyes that glow in the dark. He went into my room one night and just as he was about to sink his teeth into my neck, I quickly turned my nightlight on and he disappeared in a cloud of smoke. My mom and I braided garlic wreaths for my room to keep him away for good. I hope I never see him again!
Maybe you think of aliens…you know, strange, otherworldly beings who live on other planets in space. I’ve met some aliens – well, I can’t remember what they looked like. I only remember a bright flash of light shining upon me and lifting me into their spacecraft. They must have performed experiments on me and wiped my memory, like they did with Mrs. Bella Goth! At least they didn’t erase all my memories, like they did with her. I’ve heard that they can disguise themselves and look just like any other Sim, except the colour of their aura changes with their emotions, which is clearly visible to anyone. Anyone you know could be an alien – maybe even someone in this room!
Maybe you think of mermaids…you know, mesmerizing creatures of the sea who are half woman, half fish. I’ve seen a mermaid – she was swimming in the ocean when only I was looking. We were on vacation in Isla Paradiso and everyone was too occupied with other beach activities to notice. She has a beautiful aqua tail and seashells in her hair. I could swear I saw her again a few days later, but she had legs and looked like a normal Sim then. Maybe my imagination was just running wild and she and all the other magical creatures were never really there at all…
Maybe “magic” is the things we take for granted in our everyday lives. Things like a friend sharing her lunch with you when you forgot yours at home. Things like a big brother standing up for you against bullies. Things like parents who love you unconditionally and will always be there for you. Things like a dog jumping into your arms and cheering you up after a long day at school.
Things like making a wish upon a star and it actually coming true. Things like how many stars there are in the constellation and how bright they shine in the darkness. Things like a whole city lighting up at night. Things like a majestic waterfall.
Things like a rainbow appearing after a heavy storm. Things like a kind-hearted stranger who helps you find your parents after you got lost in the mall. Things like flowers starting to bloom after a cold winter, signifying the start of spring. Things like the sun rising over the horizon with the promise of a new day.
Magic is everywhere around us and can even be found in the most unexpected places – you just have to go looking for it.
Author’s Notes: I have decided to participate in the Monthly SimLit Short Story Challenge this month, organized by LisaBee, a Game Changer for The Sims 4 and fellow SimLit writer. The theme is “It’s Magic”. I originally intended to write this story with The Sims 4, but realized I’d have to download lots of mods and CC for screenshots and ultimately decided on The Sims 3. I ran into many issues, from screenshots failing to upload to WordPress to my game quitting on me just as I was about to snap the perfect screenshot! However, I was determined to get everything done and that I did.
I kindly invite you to please read all the stories entered for this challenge at the end of the month and vote for your top three choices in both categories (Novice and Veteran), meaning you will have a total of six votes. Any vote that doesn’t contain three votes in each category will be thrown out, so please vote for three Novice stories and three Veteran stories!
Thank you LisaBee for this awesome challenge and a HUGE thank you to my mentor and dear friend, Cathy Tea, for taking time out of her busy schedule to upload all (save one) of my images for me. This entry would not have been possible without her. Thank you to each and every reader and I hope you enjoyed this story.
PS: I think the challenge banner really fits this month’s theme well!
