The Spookiest Spooky Day

It’s Spooky Day and I decided to go trick or treating around the neighbourhood later in the evening.

I woke up this morning, got ready and greeted my mom goodbye as I Ieft for school. She didn’t seem to notice me, which is strange, even for her. Maybe she just didn’t hear me.

I got on the school bus and sat at the back – alone as usual, noticed by no one. Nothing new here. I’m used to being invisible at school, having no friends.

In class our teacher, Miss Graves, gave us a lesson and asked some questions. Me, Little Miss Know It All, as all the other kids refer to me, knew the answers to all the questions and held my hand up each time she asked something. She didn’t seem to notice me either. It was almost like she ignored me on purpose, because she gave everyone else a chance to answer.

After I got home from school, I grabbed a quick snack from the fridge, watched the Spooky Day specials on TV and finished my homework. Mom wouldn’t be home until late at night – she works night shifts at the hospital as a nurse. I wanted to get everything done early, so I could head out later.

I’m used to being alone, having no friends and a mom who’s barely home. Dad passed away earlier this year, trying to defeat a monstrous plant while on a mission in StrangerVille. Mom hasn’t been the same since – when she’s actually here, she mostly just sits around with no sign of human emotion…like a zombie or a robot.

I dressed up as a ghost. Or at least, I tried to. Kinda lame, I know. I really didn’t have anything else to wear and I wanted to look different this year. When it got dark, I grabbed my candy sack to finally go trick or treating. I locked the front door and went to my neighbours’ house. I knocked on the door.

No answer.

I went to the next house, where some other kids were trick or treating. After they left, I approached the owner of the house, only to have the door slammed in my face. Was I that scary?

I went to the next house and in the corner of my eye, I could see a guy dressed up as the Grim Reaper just standing around. He definitely would’ve won the contest for the best Spooky Day costume, because he looked just like what I’d expect Death to look like. Creepy.

I brushed it off and continued my quest. “Greetings,” a man dressed as a vampire greeted after opening the door. ” I know the reason for your visit. You must have a sweet tooth like me, correct?”

“Hello, sir,” I greeted. “That’s correct.”

He didn’t seem to hear me.

Some girl dressed like a skeleton suddenly stood next to me and proceeded to speak.

“Hello, sir,” she greeted. “That’s correct.” He proceeded to throw candy into her sack as I just watched on.

By this point I was getting really frustrated and quite frankly, a little creeped out. I decided to call it a night and go home empty-handed this year. The “Grim Reaper” barely moved from where he stood when I first noticed him…almost like he was waiting for someone or something. I walked past him and he looked right at me. He was a lot scarier up close – his bony hands seemed so real and I couldn’t see his face at all. If looks could kill, I’d be in Netherworld already…

I continued to walk. For some reason, I got the feeling that I was being followed, so I walked a little faster and looked behind me. The guy was following me!

Panick set in and I started to run. After a while, I looked behind me and he seemed to be gone. I sighed a breath of relief and walked on.

Suddenly, the cloaked man appeared right in front of me – out of nowhere! “Who are you and what do you want from me?!” I screamed.

“I am the Reaper of Souls, the Personification of Death,” he replied. “What I seek, young lady, is your soul – you died in your sleep last night…”
